Caring for Your New Mattress

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t give your mattress much thought, even though you likely spent a good deal of time and money to buy it, and spend a third of your life sleeping on it. The fact of the matter is, ignoring your mattress can have adverse effects on your comfort, health and bank account, so it’s essential to understand the basics of mattress care.

We would like to offer you some important mattress care tips:

Buy a new base with your mattress.

It is important to buy a mattress and base together because they work as a team.  A mattress will last longer and feel more comfortable if used with the correct, matching base.

Our sales professionals will be able to advise you on the best base for your new mattress.

Turn mattress if recommended.

This is especially important for innerspring mattresses.
The mattress industry is moving towards non-turn mattresses, but many mattresses still need to be turned on a regular basis.
Rotating and turning your mattress will help it wear more evenly. It will help to maximise comfort, minimise body impressions in the mattress, and make sure your mattress lasts as long as possible.

A good place to start is to use a safety pin and attach it to the right hand corner of your mattress.  When turning, rotate the mattress so that the safety pin is on the opposite side. Then, just move the pin to a different corner every time you turn your mattress. Some manufacturers recommend turning and rotating every two weeks for the first three months, then every two or three months thereafter. One-sided mattresses only need rotating.

Avoid back injury

Turning and rotating a mattress is a two-person job. . Always ask someone to help you.

Use a Mattress Protector.

To protect your mattress from stains use a mattress protector, which, if soiled, is far easier to clean and cheaper to replace than a mattress is.
If it does get soiled, take the sheets and mattress protector off immediately. Quick action should prevent liquid from going through to the mattress itself.
It may be a condition of the warranty that you use a mattress protector.

Keep your mattress clean and dry

We recommend investing in a quality, washable waterproof mattress protector.
Vacuum the mattress regularly (each time you change your sheets) using low suction to remove fluff and dust.

Air your mattress. Take your mattress outside and let it air in the sun. This will help to avoid mold or mildew and especially important when spot cleaning. Avoid direct heat.

Spot clean spills and stains as soon as possible with a slightly dap cloth and a mild soap and cool water solution for stain removal. Do not soak or dry-clean your mattress.

Never use the handle to lift or carry your mattress.

The handles on your mattress are not designed to take the full weight of your mattress. Handles are designed to help with positioning.

Never fold or bend your mattress.

Try to bend it as little as possible when carrying around corners.

Review the warranty.

Make sure to carefully read the warranty card that comes with your mattress. It will give you a basic guideline for maintaining your mattress.
Proper maintenance and attention is the key to mattress longevity. When properly cared for, your mattress should last at least the life of the warranty.  However, it is important to note that even with proper care, mattresses have a finite life and need to be replaced.  Choosing a quality mattress in the first place is your best insurance to getting the most value for your money, back and your health.
